Fertility Add-ons: Questions Before Paying for an Extra Procedure

Ask about evidence, benefits, risks and costs before agreeing to an optional fertility test or procedure.

An additional fertility procedure should have an understandable purpose. A technical name, higher price or newer technology does not by itself show that an option will improve your chance of a baby.

Ask what problem it addresses

Request an explanation of why the option is being offered in your case. Is it part of standard care for your diagnosis, or an optional addition? Ask which outcome it is meant to improve and what evidence supports that claim.

Discuss uncertainty and harm

Ask whether the evidence applies to patients like you, whether there are known risks and whether the procedure can affect the rest of treatment. Request the full additional cost, including any later charges.

Take time with the decision

Ask what the plan would look like without the addition. Keep a written record of the explanation and your consent. If the answer is unclear, seek clarification before paying. A patient should be able to understand the reason for an intervention without needing to understand every laboratory term.
