Laparoscopic gynaecological surgery uses a camera and specialised instruments placed through small abdominal incisions. It may be used to investigate or treat selected conditions such as endometriosis, ovarian cysts, fibroids or pelvic pain, and it can also be used for some hysterectomy procedures.
Robotic-assisted surgery is a form of laparoscopy in which the surgeon controls instruments through a robotic platform. The technology does not operate independently. Whether standard laparoscopy, robotic-assisted surgery, vaginal surgery or open surgery is most appropriate depends on the diagnosis, complexity, previous operations, available expertise and individual safety considerations.
Potential advantages of minimally invasive approaches can include smaller incisions and a faster recovery than open abdominal surgery in suitable cases. Every operation also has risks. Before deciding, ask why a particular approach is recommended, what alternatives exist, how recovery may look and what could require a change in the planned procedure.
