Preparing for Pregnancy: A Practical Preconception Checklist

A thoughtful preconception visit can help identify health, medication and lifestyle factors before pregnancy begins.

Planning a pregnancy is an opportunity to review your health before conception. A preconception consultation usually covers your medical and family history, previous pregnancies, menstrual cycles, vaccination history, current medicines and any long-term conditions. This discussion helps your obstetrician understand what may need attention before you try to conceive.

Your consultation may also include guidance on nutrition, physical activity, sleep, folic acid, smoking and alcohol. Prescription medicines, non-prescription medicines and supplements should be reviewed rather than stopped or changed without medical advice. If you live with diabetes, high blood pressure, thyroid disease or another ongoing condition, planning ahead can help coordinate safer care.

Not every couple needs the same tests. Recommendations should be based on age, symptoms, health history and individual circumstances. Seek medical advice promptly if you think you may already be pregnant, particularly when you use regular medication or have a chronic health condition.
