Postnatal Follow-up: Questions About Your Own Recovery

Make space to discuss physical recovery, bladder symptoms, feeding concerns and emotional wellbeing after birth.

Postnatal care includes your health as well as your baby’s. Write down concerns as they arise so they are not lost during a busy appointment.

Review the birth and recovery

Bring the discharge summary and ask about anything in it you do not understand. Discuss wound concerns, pain, bleeding, bladder or bowel symptoms and medicines. Ask what activity is appropriate for your recovery rather than comparing yourself with someone else.

Talk about support

Mention sleep difficulties, feeding concerns and how you are coping emotionally. Ask which professional can help if a concern needs more time than the visit allows. You do not need to wait until symptoms become overwhelming to ask for support.

Know the urgent route

Heavy bleeding, chest pain, trouble breathing, fainting or feeling severely unwell needs urgent assessment. Confirm whom to contact between appointments. Before leaving a routine review, ask about follow-up, contraception and the next step for any unresolved symptom.
