First Antenatal Appointment: What to Bring

Prepare your dates, medicines and health history for the first pregnancy appointment.

The first antenatal appointment helps your maternity team understand your health and plan pregnancy care. Book early rather than waiting until you have collected every possible report.

Prepare your history

Note the first day of your last period, previous pregnancies and any fertility treatment. Bring prescriptions, supplements, allergies and records of ongoing conditions. Mention previous pregnancy complications and operations, even if they happened years ago.

Make your questions practical

Ask which investigations are planned, where they take place and how results are shared. Confirm which medicines should continue and ask before making changes. Tell the team if travel, work or language makes attending appointments difficult.

Know how to get help

Before leaving, write down whom to contact between visits and where urgent maternity assessment is available. A scheduled appointment should not delay urgent care if you develop severe pain, heavy bleeding, fainting or feel seriously unwell. Keep your pregnancy records together so they are available wherever you receive care.

Dr. Arnav Pai provides pregnancy and high-risk obstetric care in Mumbai. His published profile records gold medals in MBBS and MS Obstetrics and Gynaecology, alongside DNB and MRCOG qualifications. Bring your antenatal records when planning care.
