Each pregnancy scan has a particular purpose. Ask what the appointment is intended to assess rather than assuming every scan checks every aspect of the pregnancy.
Before the visit
Confirm the location, preparation instructions and which previous reports to bring. Ask whether a companion can attend. If you have had a scan elsewhere, bring the actual report and images if available rather than relying on a verbal summary.
After the scan
Ask who will explain the result and whether another appointment or investigation is needed. If a finding is uncertain, request a plain-language explanation of what is known, what cannot yet be concluded and the next step. Avoid drawing conclusions from an isolated measurement without clinical context.
Keep the pathway clear
Note the date of follow-up and who is responsible for arranging it. If the report advises prompt review, contact the treating team rather than waiting for a routine visit. A scan complements your clinical care; it does not replace reporting new symptoms.
